International Classification of Sleep Disorders

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) is a classification system for sleep disorders and norm variants that occur in connection with sleep. It is published in the form of a diagnostic manual by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and is currently in its third edition (ICSD-3, 2014). The ICSD-3 forms the standard for diagnosing sleep disorders in sleep laboratories, sleep medicine departments and research institutions worldwide. The diagnoses are largely compatible with other medical and psychiatric classification systems such as the ICD-10 and the DSM-IV -TR.

Versions

  • ICSD (1991)
  • ICSD-R (1997)
  • ICSD-2 (2005)
  • ICSD-3 (2014)

construction

The ICSD-2 comprises six main groups :

two collection categories :

  • 7. Isolated symptoms, obvious norm variations and unsolved problems
  • 8. Other sleep disorders

as well as two appendices :

  • Appendix A: Sleep disorders that occur in association with organic diseases that can be classified elsewhere
  • Appendix B: Psychiatric and behavioral disorders that are common in sleep medicine differential diagnostics

Forerunner of the ICSD

The forerunner of the classification systems for sleep disorders in this series appeared in 1979 under the title "Diagnostic Classification of Sleep and Arousal Disorders". The division of sleep disorders in this publication was made into four sections. Disturbances in the initiation and maintenance of sleep (insomnias), disturbances with excessive sleepiness, disturbed sleep-wake rhythm and parasomnias were distinguished. William C. Dement , one of the developers of the multiple sleep latency test , and Allan Rechtschaffen , whose name was already known in sleep medicine for the designation of the division of sleep into “ sleep stages according to Rechtschaffen and Kales”, also acted as advisors .
