International Council of Unitarians and Universalists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) is a global network of Unitarians , Universalists and " Unitarian Universalists ". Organizations from 23 countries have come together in the council founded in Essex ( Massachusetts , USA ) in March 1995 . A meeting takes place every two years at which the priorities of the joint work are redefined. The aim is in particular to strengthen the international networking of the heterogeneous member groups.

The member organizations of the ICUU represent approximately 500,000 people in the world who belong to this religious tradition. Smaller organizations that have joined the ICUU sometimes only have a few hundred members. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) in the USA, on the other hand, has around 200,000 members. The UUA had a special interest in the establishment of the ICUU, as in the previous years there had been a great influx of organizations outside the USA that wanted to become members of the UUA. Since the UUA did not see itself as a global umbrella organization , it supported the establishment of the ICUU both organizationally and financially.
