The International Dendrology Society is an association based in Herefordshire , UK.

The purpose is to promote research, but also to encourage people to enjoy trees and other woody plants, to bring together dendrologists from all over the world and to protect and preserve rare and endangered species worldwide. The association was founded in 1952 by Robert and Georges de Belder, Gerd Krüssmann and Jacques Lombarts as the International Dendrology Union . At the first general meeting in September 1952, 50 members from five countries took part. In 1965 the name of the association was changed to International Dendrology Society . At around the same time, a travel organization committee and a science and education committee were established to hold symposia , establish a seed exchange program, grant scholarships to promising students from developing countries, and give awards to arboretums . In 1994 the Dendrology Charitable Company was formed, which is active in charities. In 2012 the association had 1,500 members from 50 countries.

  • Betula (birches, 1992)
  • Temperate trees under threat (Trees under threat in the temperate zone, 1994)

  • Araucariaceae (Araucarias, 2002)
