The International Moss Stock Center (IMSC) is an international biobank ( cryobank ) for mosses . It is used to collect, store and distribute samples of various mosses for scientific purposes. With the publication of the fully sequenced genome of Physcomitrella patens in 2008, there was an increasing need for a central organization of the various samples, so that in February 2010 the IMSC was set up at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . The process for sample preservation had been developed around ten years earlier as part of a cooperation between BASF and the Department of Plant Biotechnology at the University of Freiburg.

The IMSC collection includes various ecotypes of Physcomitrella patens , Physcomitrium and Funaria ( Funariaceae ) as well as some transgenic strains and mutants of Physcomitrella patens , including knockout mosses .

Be moss samples at the IMSC in special containers freezer at -135 ° C in the gas phase of liquid nitrogen cryopreserved . The regeneration rate of P. patens is 100% under these conditions. All samples are automatically assigned identification numbers when they are stored, which can be cited in publications. A barcode system enables quick access to samples and related information.

The IMSC is supported by the Chair of Plant Biotechnology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg under Professor Ralf Reski and the Center for Biological Signaling Studies (bioss).
