The International Ocean Institute is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the sustainable development, management and protection of the world's oceans .

history

The institute was founded in 1972 by the marine conservationist Elisabeth Mann-Borgese and advocated a binding agreement within the framework of the UN for a globally applicable law of the sea. Mann-Borgese fought for their Pacem concept in Maribus-Peace of the World (PIM) . The institute contributed significantly to the creation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in the negotiation process from 1974 to 1982.

The IOI now has 25 centers worldwide, i. d. Are usually attached to universities. There the institute offers training programs in international maritime law and programs in research and technology in the marine field. At the University of the South Pacific in Fiji , the IOI worked with the university to develop a course that teaches how to deal with marine protected areas.
