Since it was founded in November 2007, the briefly named resource panel has been constantly collating the state of scientific knowledge about the consequences of the exploitation of renewable and non-renewable resources. It is also intended to promote the international exchange of knowledge on sustainable resource management.
Initiated in September 2006, the panel was officially founded at the World Science Forum in Budapest on November 9, 2007. It consists of up to 20 scientists, with Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker and Ismail Serageldin as chairmen .
According to the Wuppertal Institute, which is also involved, the model for the panel is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change , which uses a similar approach to regularly summarize the state of knowledge about global warming .
