The WSF sees itself in science as the future equivalent of the annual World Economic Forum ( World Economic Forum ) in Davos, Switzerland, as "the Davos of science". The necessity of such a forum is justified by the fact that science and knowledge today no longer primarily serve to satisfy the curiosity of individual researchers, but has become an indispensable component for modern everyday life, the future development of human society, its quality of life and the preservation of the natural foundations of life and because the relationship between science and knowledge and society is faced with fundamentally new questions and challenges. Analogous to the World Economic Forum in Davos, the World Science Forum in Budapest sees itself as the place where globally important research nations and companies can conduct a dialogue with science on the most important questions of future global science policy and the future role of science in society. Another aim of the WSF is to promote the communication of science to the public in general and, in particular, to provide insight into the need for scientific advice in political and economic decision-making processes.

history

The origin of the WSF was the World Conference on Science ( World Science Conference ) in Budapest, organized by UNESCO and the ICSU in 1999 , in which over 2000 delegates from 186 countries took part. At this conference under the motto "Science for the 21st Century - A New Commitment" a declaration of principles (Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge) and an action plan (Science Agenda - Framework for Action, German: Agenda for Science ) decided.

The first meeting called the World Science Forum took place in 2003. Previous topics:

  • 2003: Knowledge and Society
  • 2005: Knowledge, Ethics and Responsibility
  • 2007: Investing in Knowledge: Investing in the Future; The International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management , an international scientific institution under the umbrella of the UN Environment Program , was founded at this forum
  • 2009: Knowledge and Future
  • 2011: The changing landscape of science: Challenges and opportunities; For the first time, a joint declaration was adopted at this forum: Declaration on a New Era of Global Science
