Ismail Serageldin

Ismail Serageldin ( Arabic إسماعيل سراج الدين, DMG Ismāʿīl Serāǧ ad-Dīn , * 1944 in Giza ) is an Egyptian economist . From 2002 to 2017 he was director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria and chairman of the board of directors of the institutes connected to the library .

Career

Serageldin earned his first degree, Bachelor of Science, from Cairo University in 1964 . After completing his master’s degree at Harvard University , he received his doctorate there in 1972 ( Ph. D. ). He worked as a consultant for urban and regional planning and taught at the universities of Cairo and Harvard.

After completing his doctorate, Serageldin held various positions at the World Bank from 1972 to 1998 , most recently from 1993 to 1998 as Vice-President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development .

In 2002 Serageldin was appointed director of the new Alexandria library.

Serageldin is Honorary Professor of the University of Wageningen and holder of 33 honorary doctorates , most recently in 2012 by the Odlar Yurdu University in Baku , member of the d'Institute Égypte , the Twas , the American Philosophical Society (2011), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2012) and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Following the 2011 revolution in Egypt and the resignation of Mubarak , 118 unproven allegations were made against Serageldin. A prosecutor eventually made three allegations of "mismanagement" against him, including the allegation that he paid excessive salaries. Serageldin was surprisingly sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Twenty heads of state and 90 Nobel Prize winners signed a protest letter; numerous celebrities protested. He was acquitted by the appeals court.

Publications

Serageldin is the author and co-author of more than fifty books and monographs. His articles include work on nutritional development, sustainability and prosperity of nations, biotechnology and the like. a.
