Academy of Sciences for the Developing World
TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world ( Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) until 2004; the acronym 'TWAS' was retained) is a non-governmental academy of sciences . The academy is based at the International Center for Theoretical Physics ICTP in Trieste , Italy .
The academy was founded in 1983 by the Pakistani Nobel Prize winner Abdus Salam (1926–1996) and other scientists. The aim is to promote scientific work in developing countries and to pursue sustainable development in the southern hemisphere .
The academy has over 1000 elected members from 90 countries. In 2010 she was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize for a “work of high moral and humanitarian value”.
