International Payment Instruction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IPI (International Payment Instruction) payment slip is a Europe-wide uniform payment slip. This was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Banking Standards (ECBS).

The appearance is mandatory for all participating countries. The standardized IPI receipt can be used in practically all European countries and with most European currencies. It enables automated payment processing and can be used for both national and international payments.

With the introduction of the European Payments Area (SEPA) and its payment options, the IPI slip is largely obsolete.

In Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein , however, the IPI payment slip is still used to make manual SEPA payments. Electronically recorded IPI transfers are interpreted by the banks as SEPA-compliant payments and executed as such.
