history

The establishment of an international school for the Schaffhausen area was an instrument of economic development. The ISSH project was implemented in 1998/99 by a group of volunteers for the benefit of the Schaffhausen location.

The ISSH started in Schaffhausen in 1999 with 23 students and has since recorded a steady increase in the number of students to currently 250 students. At the end of 2003, the Schaffhausen Economic Development Corporation and those responsible for the school recognized the need for a larger property. On the one hand, this should enable the companies' need for school places to be met at all times and that the school can grow step by step and future requirements can be met. This was not possible at the first location close to the center. In 2009 the school moved into the Logierhaus, a former Georg Fischer workers' hostel in Mühlental, which had been converted to meet the needs of the school. In 2011 the new Matura department of the ISSH was certified by the International Baccalaureate Organization. In 2012, a new building for the growing number of secondary and upper school students was built on the site. In 2013, a bilingual day nursery was set up in cooperation with Unilever according to international standards. The first boarding house was opened in 2014 with 6 students.

Student body

In the 2015/2016 school year, over 250 students aged 3 to 19 attended the ISSH; these students had 46 different nationalities and spoke 26 different languages. Most of the students came from the USA (15%), Switzerland (13%) Germany (12%), UK (7.5%) and the Netherlands (5%). 25% of the students are local students with a German-speaking background. The average class size was 14 students. Around 65% of the students come from families residing in the canton of Schaffhausen. About half of them live in the city of Schaffhausen. The remaining 35% come from neighboring cantons or the German border area.
