International Seed Testing Association

The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA; German: Internationale Vereinigung für Saatgutprüfung) was founded in 1924 and has more than 100 institutional members worldwide.

The association, founded in 1924, is an amalgamation of authorized laboratories to determine the marketability of seeds as stipulated for Germany in the Seed Traffic Act. The tasks include the definition of the methods for determining the thousand-grain mass , germination capacity and driving force as well as the proportion of foreign stock or seeds containing genetically modified organisms (GMO). The test results and certificates of ISTA members on the seed quality of individual batches are recognized by the trading partners of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the worldwide trade in seeds .
