International Society for Third Sector Research

The International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR) is an international and interdisciplinary scientific society. Its aim is to promote research and teaching related to the so-called third sector or non-profit area . It currently has around 1,100 members from 74 countries. The office of the association, founded in 1992, is based at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore ( Maryland , USA ).

activities

The ISTR organizes world congresses every two years, most recently in Amsterdam in 2018 and in Stockholm in 2016 . The 14th World Congress will take place in Montreal in July 2021 .

In addition, ISTR organizes regional conferences, a network of doctoral students and continental regional networks in Latin America, Asia / Oceania, Africa and the Near and Middle East.

ISTR is the publisher of the English-language trade journal Voluntas - International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations . The journal is devoted to questions of third sector and civil society research, philanthropy and related research fields and is produced using the double-blind expert opinion process. ISTR also publishes the book series Nonprofit and Civil Society Studies .

Every two years ISTR awards a prize for outstanding dissertations in the field of third-sector research.
