International Standard Bibliographic Description

The ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description = international standard for the description of bibliographic data) is a standard, an international format, which is maintained by the IFLA . The ISBD format enables a uniform description of library materials in connection with library registration .

history

The original core idea behind the ISBD format was to develop a bibliographical standard for international data exchange . The ISBD was preceded by the Paris Principles , a first internationally supported, theoretical policy paper on bibliographical description that was drawn up in 1961 at the conference of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) in Paris. As a result, the idea arose in 1969 to develop an international standard for the bibliographic description. In 1971 the ISBD appeared for monographs.

IFLA has its own working group that is responsible for the further development of the ISBD. The last version of the ISBD was presented in 2011.
