International Vocabulary of Metrology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

International Vocabulary of Metrology is a dictionary that contains definitions of metrology and explains the associated basic and general terms.

The title of the work in German / French / English is:

  • de: "International Dictionary of Metrology"
  • fr: V ocabulaire i nternational de m étrologie - Concepts fondamentaux et généraux et termes associés (VIM)
  • en: International vocabulary of metrology - Basic and general concepts and associated terms

The work is bilingual English / French. It is known internationally by the abbreviation 'VIM' (derived from the French title). The VIM was developed in the hope of stimulating the dialogue between experts from various specialized disciplines, as emphasized in the foreword to VIM2. No new ( stipulative ) definitions of terms should be introduced, only descriptive (descriptive) definitions that clarify how the terms are already commonly used in different subject areas.

The first two editions had the English title "International vocabulary of basic and general terms in metrology".

After the previous version from 1993 (as ISO Guide 99: 1993 ) was released in late 2007, to issue ISO / IEC Guide 99: 2007 , composed of BIPM ( B ureau I nternational de P oids et M esures) or the responsible working group JCGM . The VIM can be purchased from ISO as ISO / IEC Guide 99 for a fee or can be downloaded free of charge from BIPM as publication JCGM 200: 2012 . In 2008, the JCGM made a conscious decision to make the third edition available free of charge as a PDF file in order to facilitate access to information on metrology. A German-English version of the dictionary is available for a fee.
