As early as 1963, stamp collectors from the FIPCO Working Group IIIb joined together to form a new group of motifs. It was already international back then. The first member list shows 12 names from 7 European countries. The Working Group on Railways from the Netherlands has joined her. After FIPCO was dissolved, FIP took over the management. The group was called FIP-Motivgruppe Eisenbahnwesen . The broadcast service was started as early as 1965 and on March 27, 1966, the first railway motif collectors' meeting took place in Ludwigshafen. The first congress of the motivational group was held on October 3, 1966 in Luxembourg. Since then there has been an annual congress with the general assembly and a supporting program. The 53rd Congress took place in Næstved from May 30th to June 2nd, 2019 .

In 1988 the motif group became independent when the association was founded. The entry in the register of associations took place after the 23rd Congress in Utrecht with the name “Internationale Motivgruppe Eisenbahnwesen e. V. "
