According to the statutes, the purpose of the IVR is to “maintain and promote science and research in the field of legal and social philosophy on the national and international level” (“cultivation and promotion of legal and social philosophy on the national and international level”) every scholarly direction is open. For this purpose, the IVR organizes world congresses every two years. In addition, she is the editor of the international journal “ Archive for Legal and Social Philosophy ” (ARSP) and the specialist encyclopedia “Encyclopedia of the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy”.

history

1909 to 1944

The foundation of the IVR in 1909:

The IVR was founded on October 1st, 1909 in Berlin under the name "International Association for Legal and Economic Philosophy". The association received its current name - "International Association for Legal and Social Philosophy" - in 1933.

The founding chairmen were Fritz Berolzheimer (executive chairman), Josef Kohler (honorary chairman) and Carl Fürstenberg (chairman for property matters). The executive committee was supported by an "honorary council of the non-German cultural states" with members from 15 non-German states and by an "advisory committee" with 40 members. The entrepreneur and patron Wilhelm Merton acted as patron of the association . The directory of the founding members of the IVR from 1909 names 166 people. Among others, 96 came from Germany, 13 from Austria-Hungary, 11 from the Netherlands, 9 from Switzerland, 6 from Italy, 6 from Russia.

Two years before the IVR was founded, a scientific journal for legal and economic philosophy had already been founded. The founding editors of the “Archive for Legal and Economic Philosophy” (ARWP) founded in 1907 were Fritz Berolzheimer and Josef Kohler . The publishing house “Verlagbuchhandlung Dr. Walther Rothschild ”under the direction of Walther Rothschild based in Berlin. Since the IVR was founded, the magazine has served as its publication organ. At the same time as the association was renamed, in 1933 the magazine was also renamed “ Archive for Legal and Social Philosophy ” (ARSP).

The first IVR congresses:

The first IVR congress took place in Berlin in May 1910. The congress held in the rooms of the Prussian manor house was attended by around 70 participants and 20 accompanying persons, most of whom came from Germany. The scientific program consisted of 10 lectures on basic questions of legal philosophy. Two of the founding fathers gave programmatic lectures: Josef Kohler on "Tasks and Goals of Legal Philosophy" and Fritz Berolzheimer on the "Methodological Controversy in the Legal Philosophy of the Present". Walter Pollack's presentation was even supported by a “slide show”. The supporting program included a welcome evening in the Palast Hotel and two afternoon receptions with the Kohler and Fürstenberg couples (the latter resided in a representative villa in Berlin-Grunewald).

Just one year after the founding congress, the second IVR congress took place in Darmstadt in 1911. The congress was under the patronage of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen and bei Rhein, who personally attended the congress on the second day. The congress had 120 participants, including many from the southern Hessian judiciary. The scientific program consisted of 12 lectures. Particular attention was paid to questions of law reform, particularly those relating to legal training and continuing legal education.

The third congress took place in 1914 on the premises of the Academy for Social and Commercial Sciences in Frankfurt am Main. The congress was attended by 170 participants and was mainly devoted to practical questions from the fields of law and economics. In addition, there were also programmatic lectures on legal philosophical topics such as by Josef Kohler on the “Program of Neo-Hegelianism” and by Fritz Berolzheimer on the “Limits of Legal Philosophy”.

The time of National Socialism and the dissolution in 1944:

After National Socialism took power, the deputy chairman Goetz Briefs, a Catholic social philosopher, was dismissed from office in 1933/34 and forced to emigrate.

Also in 1933, the association was renamed "International Association for Legal and Social Philosophy" and the magazine was renamed "Archive for Legal and Social Philosophy" (ARSP).

In 1935, Carl August Emge , professor of legal philosophy in Berlin, succeeded Wilhelm Sauer as managing director of the IVR and at the same time editor of the ARSP. In 1948 Emge was certified that it was thanks to him “that the IVR was not 'subordinate' to anyone and that it retained its apolitical, purely scientific character”.

In 1944 the IVR, which at that time had 1,000 members, was dissolved as a result of the war.

1948 to the present

The IVR was re-established at a meeting on August 6, 1948 in Mainz. Rudolf von Laun (1st chairman), Wilhelm Szilasi (2nd chairman) and Ulrich Klug (3rd chairman) were elected to the founding board.

At the 2nd World Congress of the World IVR in Vienna in 1959 it was decided to divide the association into various national sections.

organization structure

The association has over 2000 members worldwide. The members have been organized in national sections since the 1950s, which organize events on their own responsibility and are financially independent. The IVR currently has 41 national sections.

The congresses of the old IVR were limited to Germany and took place in Berlin (1910), Darmstadt (1911), Frankfurt am Main (1914) and Berlin (1926).

The first congress after the re-establishment of the IVR in 1948 took place in 1957 in Saarbrücken. Two years later the congress in Vienna (Austria) followed. The subsequent congresses were initially held every four years, and then every two years from 1981. The first congress outside Europe was organized by Gray Dorsey in 1975 in St. Louis (USA). Soon after the convention in St. Louis (USA) there were congresses in Australia (Sydney & Canberra 1977), Mexico (Mexico City 1981) and Japan (Kobe 1987).
