International agricultural film competition

The International Agricultural Film Competition (IAW) was a film festival that took place every two years from 1960 to 1986 during Green Week in West Berlin .

The organizers were the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forests and the Berlin Senate . The preparation, organization and implementation of the IAW was the responsibility of a leading committee with some high-ranking representatives from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture , the Berlin Senate, the area of agricultural marketing and the public broadcasters. The competition was sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The IAW was founded with the aim of gaining an overview of agricultural film making worldwide. The festival also emphasized the central importance of agricultural films for further training, documentation and self-portrayal of agriculture. It was also important to ensure an exchange that brought people together and to provide information about the agricultural, social and ecological conditions, especially in developing countries . The interest in foreign nations with which the Federal Republic of Germany had diplomatic relations was correspondingly high right from the start: from 29 participating nations in 1960, the number rose to 46 countries in 1982. With the exception of Romania , no Warsaw Pact country took part in the competitions.

Between 72 and 250 films per competition were initially viewed and rated by three, later by four international juries. The contributions were from 1964 to III. IAW divided into the groups Agriculture, Food and Environment. Within these categories, the prizes were awarded in the cinema film and television report categories. The division of the categories was discussed from the beginning due to the difficulty of differentiating them from one another. In the course of the IAW's history, the classification of the categories has been changed accordingly.

The awards presented by the IAW were gold, silver and bronze ears for the best films in each category. There were also special prizes donated by the Freedom from Hunger Campaign , the Association of European Agriculture , the Office Catholique International du Cinéma , the International Inter-Church Film Center , the Interfilm , the Inforfilm and the International Association of Agricultural Journalists . The prizes were awarded by the current Federal Minister of Agriculture during a ceremony at the International Green Week.
