The International Girls 'Day (also known as World Girls ' Day , English: International Day of the Girl Child ) is a day of action initiated by the United Nations (UN). Every year on October 11th it is supposed to give an occasion to point out the disadvantages of girls around the world.

prehistory

The idea for this day arose in 2003 as part of the “Because I am a Girl” campaign by the Plan International Deutschland eV association. In September 2008, the first, unofficial “International Girls' Day” was proclaimed. In 2009 the national organizations of Plan International called on the UN to officially support the day as a global day of action. On December 19, 2011, the UN took up the idea. It was supported, among others, by the German Bundestag, which voted on September 21, 2011 across all political groups to set up the day. Since 2011, Plan International Germany has called the day in German "World Girls' Day".

Goals of the International Girls' Day

The International Girls' Day aims to draw attention to the difficult situation of girls in many countries around the world. Accompanying campaigns should show ways to improve the situation. Requirements include:

  • targeted promotion of girls and young women through education
  • Combating forced marriage
  • Equality in all areas of life
  • consistent implementation of anti-discrimination laws
  • no tolerance for violence against girls and young women in the name of tradition or culture

subjects

International Girls' Day has had an official theme every year since 2012. The previous topics were:

  • 2012: "Ending child marriage" ( child marriages end)
  • 2013: "Innovating for Girls' education" (innovations for the education of girls)
  • 2014: "Ending the cycle of violence"
  • 2015: "The Power of Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030"
  • 2016: "Girls 'Progress = Goals' Progress: What Counts for Girls"
  • 2017: "EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises"
  • 2018: "A Skilled Girlforce - Need of the Hour"
  • 2019: "GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable"

Lighting actions

Lighting of the Hamburg Planetarium in pink for World Girls' Day 2014

In order to draw attention to the concerns of girls worldwide, Plan has been illuminating well-known buildings and objects in the color pink since 2011 on the evening of October 11th . Niagara Falls , the Pyramids of Giza and the London Eye were among these “pinkifications”, as they are called by the Children's Fund . In Germany, the Berlin radio tower , the sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers in the Port of Hamburg, the Fridericianum in Kassel and the Lübeck Holstentor shone in pink on World Girls' Day 2014 .

The strong pink of the campaign has a strong signal force and, according to the plan, is intended to convey “joie de vivre and the courage to be offensive”. However, the choice of pink has also been the subject of criticism because it reinforces stereotypes and gender biases about girls rather than reducing them.
