The International Day of care , also International Nurses Day, (deprecated International Day of Nurses , English: International Nurses Day ) is an internationally committed action , which annually on May 12 will be celebrated. He commemorates the birthday of Florence Nightingale , the pioneer of modern nursing .

background

Plans for a "Nurses Day" were first expressed in 1953 by Dorothy Sutherland, an employee of the US Department of Health . However, the then US President Dwight D. Eisenhower refused to have him proclaimed. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) finally took the lead and celebrated the day since 1965. Since January 1974, the day was officially set for May 12th. It is intended to recognize the work of nurses and highlight their role in the health system. In Germany it was also called International Nurses Day, but was then renamed International Nursing Day.

May 12th is supposed to commemorate the birthday of Florence Nightingale in 1820, who is considered to be the founder of modern western nursing.

Campaigns take place around the world around the day of action. For example, a nurse's fair is held annually at Westminster Abbey in London . In some countries there is an action week. In the United States, National Nursing Week is May 6-12, while Canada takes the week that includes May 12.

The day is also associated with calls to politicians for an improvement in the care situation. The ICN is issuing educational and promotional materials for this day aimed at drawing attention to the great achievements of carers around the world. The ICN also always has a different motto for the day.

2020 was a special year for International Nursing Day. Not only did 2020 mark the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared 2020 the worldwide year of professional carers and midwives. The day of action this year coincided with the global COVID-19 pandemic .
