The International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women ( English: United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women ; INSTRAW ) was a special organ United Nations , based in Santo Domingo .

It was established by the UN Economic and Social Council on the recommendation of the World Conference on the International Year of Women 1975 in Mexico . INSTRAW began its activity in 1979 - from 1983 its headquarters were in Santo Domingo , the capital of the Dominican Republic . INSTRAW's focus was on the role of women in the development process and their support through research and training. The institute was financed by donations, most of which were made available by government bodies or private donors. The administration of INSTRAW consisted of 11 people: a representative of the general secretary, the director of the institute, one representative each of the 5 regional economic commissions, one representative of the host country and representatives of 3 countries elected by the UN Economic and Social Council. In addition, INSTRAW received support from speakers, volunteers at the UN and a lively internship program. In stark contrast to the Institute's goals, the percentage of women in United Nations parliaments has decreased from 14.8% in 1988 to 11.3% in 1995.

In July 2010 INSTRAW was incorporated into the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, newly founded by resolution 64/289 of the General Assembly of the United Nations .
