The International Year of Youth 2010

On December 18, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 2010/11 the "International Year of Youth". The year coincides with the 25th anniversary of the first International Youth Year 1985 on "Participation, Development and Peace". The aim of the year is to promote the ideals of peace, freedom, progress, solidarity and commitment to goals and objectives. In addition, attention should be drawn to youth participation and youth development and partnerships of youth organizations from all over the world should be given a new impetus.

Local events

Magdeburg

In 2011, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt also organized the "Year of Youth". The theme year served to depict the realities of life of young people, to let them participate actively in social and political life and to show personal and professional perspectives. The young people were not only the focus, but also designed the year, initiated and organized projects. Magdeburg was the first city in Germany to proclaim a "Year of Youth" and at the same time put the planning, implementation and follow-up in the hands of young people.

Traditionally, the Otto city of Magdeburg focuses on a special topic every year. The Year of Science and the 12th Century Magdeburg have made the success of such themed years clear. With the “Year of Youth” 2011, thanks to centralized and decentralized events, the interests, wishes and fears of young people were publicized locally, regionally and nationally in order to sensitize the population to the topic, but also to show them the realities of young people's lives. The theme year was supported by the city's cultural institutions as well as associations and educational institutions - including networking on a national level.

The idea of organizing a “Year of Youth” came from the young people themselves, who worked out a concept and presented it to the Mayor of Magdeburg. The closing event took place in November 2011. Following this, the organizations develop detailed documentation that describes the projects and procedures carried out in detail. Even after the Year of Youth, projects will be continued - have been transferred to a new sponsor or continued in a different framework. The topic of youth was also brought into focus in many places and will continue to play a major role in the social and political life of the city of Magdeburg in the years to come. In December 2012, the year of youth in Magdeburg was the 2nd winner of the German Citizens' Prize 2012 in the category of everyday heroes.
