The International State Ecological Sakharov Institute ( Belarusian Міжнародны дзяржаўны экалагічны інстытут імя А.Д.Сахарава , Russian Международный государственный экологический институт имени А. Д. Сахарова , English International Sakharov Environmental Institute (ISEI) ) is the main state institution for environmental scientists in Belarus . It is located in the state capital Minsk .

The educational facility was founded in response to the Chernobyl disaster , on the initiative of a congress in memory of the Soviet nuclear physicist , human rights activist and Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov and the UN's Chernobyl program . In 1992 it was first opened as Sakharov College . In 1994 the name was changed to the International Institute for Radiation Ecology according to the main teaching and research content. In 1999 the institute received the status of a university and in 2015 it was reintegrated as an institute into the Belarusian State University . In 2006/2007 around 1050 students were enrolled.

The Sakharov Institute has four faculties: environmental observation , environmental medicine , advanced training ( radiation protection , energy technology ) and preparatory training. In 2012 a branch office was opened in Yerevan .

The university became known in Germany primarily for its studies on the Elbmarsch leukemia cluster .
