Interpersonal psychotherapy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a short-term psychotherapy, which in the 1970s and 1980s heavy and outpatient treatment approach for adults with moderate to non-delusional disorders has been developed. It is based on Harry Stack Sullivan's interpersonal theory . Over the past thirty years, a number of empirical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of IPT in treating depression . In fact, a meta-analysis of 53 studies that compared the effectiveness of different therapy methods showed that interpersonal psychotherapy is most effective, especially for depression in adults. Although it was originally conceived as an individual therapy for adults, it was also adapted to work with adolescents and patients of involutional age (regression age - from around the age of 45) as well as for use in counseling for couples . It is used in bipolar disorders as well as in bulimia and postpartum depression .

Although the IPT is rooted in psychodynamic theories , it also takes up cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approaches, on the one hand through its time limit, on the other hand through the use of homework, structured patient interviews and a final effectiveness check.

Interpersonal psychotherapy was developed by Gerald Klermann et al. Initially thought of as placebo therapy in psychotherapy research , it has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of psychological problems. It is based on the idea that psychological problems are caused by communication disorders , which in turn depend on fundamental relationship patterns.

Clinical Applications

Interpersonal psychotherapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression and it has been adapted to treat addiction and eating disorders . The therapist's goal must be to promptly establish a warm and understanding relationship with the patient that is characterized by affection and appreciation, in order to enable the patient to open up and seek help.

Interpersonal psychotherapy has been shown to be effective in treating the following diagnoses:
