Josef Rattner

Josef Rattner (born April 4, 1928 in Vienna ) is an Austrian psychotherapist , doctorate philosopher and physician and author . Rattner is considered a pioneer in large group therapy .

Life

Josef Rattner was born in Vienna as the youngest of four children . After the German army marched into Austria in 1938, the family emigrated to Switzerland , where they lived in Schaffhausen until 1948 . Here Rattner met Friedrich Liebling , an individual psychologist who was 35 years his senior and who had also fled Austria. After Rattner's parents emigrated to Brazil , Rattner and Liebling moved to Zurich in 1950 .

Josef Rattner studied philosophy , psychology , pedagogy , German literature and art history at the University of Zurich (graduated with the dissertation The Image of Man in Philosophy by Martin Heidegger ), then medicine (graduated: Dissertation The essence of the schizophrenic reaction ).

The basis of the form of depth psychology later developed by Rattner is Alfred Adler's individual psychology , which was imparted to him by Friedrich Liebling, who later founded the Zurich School of Psychotherapy .

In 1968 Rattner went to West Berlin. There he founded the “Working Group for Depth Psychology, Group Dynamics and Group Therapy” and in the early 1970s the institute of the same name, where he implemented his ideas of “understanding depth psychology” and therapy for large groups. In the 1970s, the large groups initially gathered in rented rooms at the Free University of Berlin. Rattner later bought a house in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where therapies and training courses open to the public took place several times a week until 1994. In the therapeutic sessions, each person's problems are discussed in front of the group. The large group consists of students, psychologists and other interested people. The aim of therapy is not only to increase self-knowledge and human knowledge, but also to acquire knowledge of cultural history.

From 1989, Rattner was the editor of the 1976 founded magazine Learning to live together - magazine for depth psychology, personality development and cultural research. In addition, from 1986/87 he published the yearbook for understanding depth psychology and cultural analysis . The magazine was discontinued in November 2012 with the 37th volume, the 2008 yearbook with the 28th volume. Since 2011 Rattner has been gradually publishing selected works of his own in a "study edition" in the "Verlag für Tiefenpsychologie".

After an illness in 1994, Rattner withdrew from therapeutic practice. Since then he has continued to work as a writer. He publishes many books together with the Berlin doctor Gerhard Danzer . Rattner's intention is to convey humanistic ethics and to encourage people to think freely without state and religious tutelage, ie to transform " Homo insipiens " into Homo sapiens .

Since 2000, the institute has offered training as a psychological psychotherapist and as an “individual psychological advisor” and since 2005 also as a child and adolescent psychotherapist .

In 2015 Rattner founded the "Academy for Understanding Depth Psychology and Cultural Analysis" and in 2018 together with his wife the non-profit "Josef Rattner Foundation / Academy for Understanding Depth Psychology and Cultural Analysis"
