The European Association for Nature and Cultural Interpretation (officially: Interpret Europe - European Association for Heritage Interpretation e.V.) is an international organization that has been registered in Germany as an association since 2010 and recognized as a non-profit organization.

Members are associations and institutions as well as companies and individuals. Around 90% of the members have their main residence in Europe.

history

The interpretation of nature and culture originated in the US national parks in the first half of the 20th century and was captured by Freeman Tilden in 1957 . The first national interpretation association in Europe was in 1975 the forerunner of the British Association for Heritage Interpretation. Interpret Europe was initially launched as an open network in 2000. The association was founded on July 14, 2010 in Slovenia.

aims

The association promotes research and practice in the field of nature and culture interpretation.

Interpretation of nature and culture is a non-formal educational concept that encourages people to relate to their own natural and cultural heritage through direct experience of places, objects or events and to gain deeper insights. The concept is used worldwide primarily in protected natural and cultural landscapes, monuments, museums, zoos and botanical gardens.

Interpret Europe sees itself as a European platform for cooperation and exchange, both by institutions and universities where nature and cultural interpretation is taught.

activities

Interpret Europe organizes specialist conferences, participates in international projects and conducts training courses.

Specialist conferences consist of up to 100 lectures, workshops and excursions, with the majority of participants participating in the design themselves. Previous meetings have taken place in Germany (2011), Italy (2012), Sweden (2013), Croatia (2014) and Poland (2015). The 2016 conference in Belgium, "Heritage Interpretation - for the Future of Europe", was dedicated to the contribution of the direct experience of historical places when dealing with topics such as human rights, civic engagement or peace.

International projects promoted or promote the development of European quality criteria (LEADER project Transinterpret, Leonardo project TOPAS), the development of further training offers (Leonardo project HeriQ), working with special dialogue groups (Grundtvig project HISA) or dealing with competence-oriented Learning approaches (Leonardo project IOEH, Grundtvig project InHerit).

Interpret Europe conducts training courses in several languages and is currently mainly geared towards guides in visitor-oriented institutions such as parks or museums and their trainers.

Cooperations

Interpret Europe works in a global alliance with the National Association for Interpretation (USA), Interpretation Canada, Interpretation Australia and other initiatives and networks.

In Europe, joint projects are currently being carried out with the Association for Heritage Interpretation (Great Britain) and with Sdružení pro interpretaci místního dědictví (Czech Republic). An exchange exists with the Spanish Asociación para la Interpretación del Patrimonio and with the Portuguese Associação de Interpretação do Património Natural e Cultural .

The establishment of further national associations for nature and cultural interpretation in Europe is supported by Interpret Europe.
