The Interstate Railroad ( AAR Reporting mark: INT) was an American railroad company with a route network of 142 kilometers in the western part of the state of Virginia . The company belonged to the Virginia Coal & Iron Co. The routes of the Interstate Railroad led from Miller Yard in northeast Scott County (connection to the Clinchfield Railroad ) in a westerly direction to Appalachia and after Andover , where also the most important freight station and the seat of the company are found. There were also some branch lines that extended north into the Black Mountains. Above all, the railway transported the coal extracted from the mountains.

The company was founded in 1896. In 1909 the first section between Stonega and Norton was completed. In 1913 the Wise Terminal Co. was taken over and ten years later the connection with the Clinchfield Railroad was established. What was originally intended as a secondary line soon became the main line. In 1961, the Southern Railway acquired the company. In October 1985 the company was then merged with Norfolk Southern .
