Ardgowan Castle (also Inverkip Castle ) is a ruined castle on the estate of Ardgowan House on the banks of the Firth of Clyde in the Scottish county of Renfrewshire (now Inverclyde ). Historic Scotland has listed the three-story ruin as a Category B Historic Building.

history

1306 Inverkip was besieged by the supporters of Robert the Bruce under the leadership of Robert Boyd from Cunningham . 1403 granted King Robert III. the lands of Ardgowan to his illegitimate son, Sir John Stewart . The castle is dated to the end of the 15th century.

In 1667 Archibald Stewart was appointed baronet. 3rd Baronet married in 1730 Helen Houston , the heir to the Shaw of Greenock . Her son, Sir John Shaw-Stewart, 4th Baronet , commissioned the architect Hugh Cairncross to design a new house. Construction began in 1797 and was completed in 1801 after the old castle was abandoned. The ruin was secured and repaired in 1936.
