Ioan Silviu Suciu

Ioan Silviu Suciu (born November 24, 1977 in Sibiu ) is a former Romanian artistic gymnast .

Suciu started gymnastics in Sibiu at the age of six. He was part of the junior national team and won several medals at junior European championships. In 1997 he won three medals at the Universiade, including gold on the pommel horse.

In 2000 Suciu took part in the European Gymnastics Championships in Bremen and became European jumping champion. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in the same year he reached sixth place with the Romanian team. In 2001 Suciu was eighth on the pommel horse at the 2001 World Gymnastics Championships .

At the European Gymnastics Championships in Patras in 2002 , Suciu could not defend his jumping title. But he won silver on the pommel horse and was European champion with the Romanian gymnastics team in the team competition. At the world championships in the same year he was fifth on the floor and sixth on the pommel horse. In 2003 he narrowly missed the medal positions at the World Gymnastics Championships in Anaheim when he was fourth on the pommel horse, fifth with the team and sixth in the jump.

In 2004 Suciu was double European champion at the European Gymnastics Championships in Ljubljana. He won the title on the pommel horse and with the team. In the same year he took part in his second Olympic Games in Athens , where the Romanians won the bronze medal behind Japan and the USA. In addition, Suciu reached fourth place in the all-around competition.

At the 2005 European Gymnastics Championships , Suciu was sixth in the all-around event and eighth on parallel bars. At the gymnastics world championships in Melbourne that same year, he was runner- up behind the Chinese Xiao Qin on the pommel horse. Then he resigned.

After his sports career, Suciu, who had successfully completed his sports degree in 2001, became a coach. In 2010 he was appointed national coach for the boys.
