Ion Gresser

Ion Gresser (* 1928 ) is an American immunologist working in France, known for research on interferons .

Gresser (son of the New York lawyer William Gresser) carried out research in the 1960s at the Institute de Recherche Scientifique sur le Cancer ( Institut Gustave Roussy ) in Villejuif . His preoccupation with interferon had already begun in the USA when he was a post-doctoral student in the laboratory of John Franklin Enders in Boston. He found interferon in patients with flu and diseases of the central nervous system.

In the late 1960s, he sparked research interest in interferon by showing that it slowed the growth of tumors in mice and stimulated lymphocytes that attacked the tumors.

In 1961 he showed that leukocytes infected with Sendai virus produced large amounts of interferon. The Finnish virologist Kari Cantell perfected this into a process that made it possible for the first time to obtain larger amounts of interferon.

In the 2000s he was part of an INSERM research group at the Center des Recherches Biomedicales des Cordeliers in Paris.

In 1983 he received the Avery Landsteiner Prize .
