Iota adscriptum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The iota adscript ( lat. , "To written iota " . Greek προσγεγραμμένη , prosgegramménē ) referred to in the polytonic of writing the Greek script the letter iota in the Greek long diphthongs AI , EI and Ōi unless it is written next place under the previous vowel . In the latter case it is called Iota subscriptum .

In today's typographical practice, the iota subscriptum is mostly used for lower case letters, but it is avoided for upper case letters. Therefore one writes in lower case letters τῇ and in upper case letters ΤΗΙ (dative of the definite article feminine, der ). A small iota adscriptum is used for capital initial letters: Ἅιδης, pronounced: Hādēs (" Hades ", "underworld").
