The Hypogeum Ipogeo De Beaumont Bonelli Bellacicco is located in Taranto in the Borgo Antico in Corso Vittorio Emanuele No. 39.

It is an extraordinary building that tells the history of Taranto from geological time, around 65 million years ago, through ancient Greek , Byzantine and medieval traces to the 18th century .

The hypogeum, 14 m below the street, extends over an area of 700 m², spread over three levels. Inside you can admire fossil remains of the typical mussels from Taranto on limestone cliffs . The outer walls are from Byzantine times , while the wall facing the sea are probably of Great Greek origin. The hypogeum has an exclusive exit at sea level , which has direct access to the beach promenade of Borgo Antico.

An aristocratic building, the residence of the Marquise De Beaumont and her husband, Prince Bonelli, was built on this building. The current owner Marcello Bellacicco carried out a precise restoration that gave the walls their frescoes and the ceiling their former glory.

The hypogeum and aristocratic house as cultural assets of Taranto are available to visitors free of charge.
