Irene of Rome († around 379)
Irene of Rome (also Erena, Hirena and Heira ; * around 349/350; † around 379, buried in Rome ) is venerated as a virgin and saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches . Her feast day is February 21. You should the sister of the Pope I. Damasus have been.
Irene came from a wealthy family, her father was the church official Antonius, who may have come from Spain, and her mother's name was Laurentia. An epigram of her brother dedicated to her has survived in fragments, his lost work De virginitate is no longer regarded as dedicated to her. The vita based on the 1651 epigram by Tamajo de Salazar is considered a forgery. Irene was buried in Rome near St. Marcus and Marcellianus.
