Irish Council

The term Irish Council ( Irish Comhairle na hÉireann , English Council of Ireland ) designates the following two different councils in Irish-British history:

1920 - Government of Ireland Act

The Council of Ireland , named in the Government of Ireland Act of 1920, was originally intended to be an all-Irish council to coordinate common affairs between the governments of Southern and Northern Ireland . However, the Irish War of Independence prevented many implementations of the law. It so happened that the All-Irish Council never met.

1973 - Sunningdale Agreement

In 1973 a Council of Ireland was again established . He was a liaison between the Belfast , Dublin and London Governments on common interests and issues. The Sunningdale Agreement regulated the details of the Council, as was agreed upon in the negotiations between the 3 governments. The council consisted of 6 unionist ministers, 4 ministers from the SDLP and one minister from the Alliance Party from Northern Ireland. But just a year later, with the exit of the unionists, this council also failed.
