history

In the early 1970s, Dr. Austin O'Sullivan with the collection of materials on agriculture and rural life in Ireland. In 1974, Dr. Thomas Walsh , director of An Foras Talúntais (now Teagasc ), agreed to set up an agricultural museum. In 1976 a group was formed with the aim of founding a museum that would, among other things, house this collection. The museum was housed in the former farm buildings of Johnstown Castle and opened in 1979 by Irish President Patrick Hillery . Since then the museum has been expanded and now covers an area of 1600 m². The establishment and expansion of the museum led to the renovation of the farm buildings on the estate, which date from 1810, which is ongoing to this day (2019).

Exhibitions

The main purpose of the museum's exhibitions was to document changes in agriculture on the threshold of the industrial revolution, in particular the move away from horse-powered machines to motor-driven ones. The collections are divided into agricultural topics such as dairy farming, laundry, cooking, sugar beet cultivation, etc. The museum also has an extensive exhibition on the history of the potato and the great famine in Ireland in the mid-19th century. The collection contains number 96 of the History of Ireland in 100 Objects from the Irish Times , a washing machine from the early 1950s. Also on display is a series of 1: 1 replicas of the workshops of a blacksmith , a cooper , a wheel maker , a saddler and a basket maker .

The museum won the 2014 Best Museum Award, a competition organized by the Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland , for the role the museum plays in preserving and documenting the history of materials in the context of rural life in Ireland.
