Enniscorthy Castle

Enniscorthy Castle ( Irish Caisleán Inis Corthaidh ) is one castle in Enniscorthy in Ireland's County Wexford . The current castle was built in the 16th century.

history

The Anglo-Norman knight Philip de Prendergast and his wife Maud had the first stone low castle built here in the 1190s. Their descendants lived there until the 1370s. Then Art Mór Mac Murchadha Caomhánach attacked the castle in an attempt to recapture the land of his ancestors. The attacker was successful and so the MacMurrough Kavanaghs held the castle until 1536. Then they gave up the property and the surrounding lands in favor of Lord Leonard Gray . Enniscorthy Castle is said to have been in ruins by then. In 1569 the Earl of Kildare had it burned down completely. In 1581 Queen Elisabeth I lent the property to Edmund Spenser , who however never settled there. Later, during the plantation , the castle belonged to Henry Wallop , who had it extensively expanded and converted. In 1649 Enniscorthy Castle was captured by Oliver Cromwell's forces and served as a prison during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 . Then it became the private residence of the Roche family until they moved out in 1951. In the years that followed, the castle became the Wexford County Museum . In 2006, Enniscorthy Castle closed for renovation and reopened in 2011.

Today the development of the castle and the city from the earliest Anglo-Norman origins is shown there. The museum also has exhibits dedicated to the castle’s last inhabitants, the Roches , the industrial and commercial heritage of Enniscorthy, Colm Toybin's , Brooklyn and modernist designer Eileen Gray .

description

Enniscorthy Castle is on the banks of the River Slaney in the center of Enniscorthy town. As a Norman castle, it has four corner towers and a rectangular donjon with four floors. The original founding of a castle on this site dates back to the 12th or 13th centuries, but most of the current building dates back to the 16th century. Enniscorthy Castle is similar in style to other castles in the area, such as Ferns Castle or Carlow Castle . The castle was in ruins at the beginning of the 20th century but was restored by PJ Roche , who extended and restored the building.

Wexford County Museum

For many years the castle housed the Wexford County Museum . In 2006 it was closed for extensive renovations and the collections became the responsibility of the local authorities. Enniscorthy Castle reopened in 2011.

Today the development of the castle and the city is shown from the earliest Anglo-Norman origins, with particular attention being paid to the importance of the castle as the family home. It also features some of the items from the Wexford County Museum's older exhibits .
