Carlow Castle ( Irish Caisleán Cheatharlach ) is a ruin in Carlow , Ireland . It lies on the banks of the River Barrow .

history

Between 1207 and 1213, William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, built a three-story, rectangular limestone building with a circular watchtower attached to the outer walls at every corner . The entrance to the building was on the first floor on the north side. Inside, a stairwell connected the floors on the west side. With the death of the 1st Earl of Pembroke's great-nephew , the building fell into the possession of the rulers of England in 1306 . Six years later it was transferred to Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk , whose family owned it until 1537. During this time it was conquered twice at short notice, namely in 1494 and by Thomas FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Kildare in 1535. After the building had fallen into disrepair, Henry VIII confiscated the property. In 1616 Donogh O'Brien, 4th Earl of Thomond bought the property. The property was nationalized under Oliver Cromwell , but was later returned to the Earl of Thomond. In 1814 ownership passed to a psychiatrist named Middleton. He wanted to use the building as a psychiatric institution . To enlarge the space inside, he attached charges of black powder to the walls. During the subsequent demolition, the building was destroyed except for the eastern outer wall with the two watchtowers. The ruin is now registered as a national monument .
