Irving Parkes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Irving Parkes (born July 8, 1886 in Toronto , Ontario , † April 23, 1964 in Port Washington , New York ) was a Canadian athlete.

Career

Parkes started for the Toronto West End YMCA . He represented Canada at the 1908 Olympic Games in London . In the 800-meter run, he had to compete against the eventual Olympic champion Mel Sheppard , among others , and achieved third place. This was not enough to qualify for the next round. Furthermore, Parkes was part of the Canadian Olympic relay (together with Frank Lukemann , Lou Sebert and Donald Buddo ), which also did not get beyond the preliminary round.

His personal best over 800 meters was 1: 57.1 minutes and came from 1908.

In 2009, a Parkes great-nephew posted a team photo of the Canadian Stadium Team for the 1908 Games to the University of Western Ontario with a request to identify Irving Parkes in the picture. This led to a large-scale identification campaign, during which the identity of most of the people depicted in the photo could be established within eight months.
