Ishii Shigeo

Ishii Shigeo ( Japanese 石井 茂雄 ; born 1933 in Tōkyō ; died August 8, 1962 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Shōwa period .

life and work

Ishii Shigeo, a cousin of Yoko Ono , became a student of Miwa Takashi at the Asagaya Art School in 1945 ( 阿佐 ヶ 谷 美術 専 門 学校 , Asagaya bijutsu semmon gakkō ). He then switched to the Bunka Gakuin ( 文化 学院 ) founded by Nishimura Isaku , where he graduated in 1950. In 1955 he founded the "Discussion for Artists" ( 製作 者 懇談 会 , Seisakusha kondankai ). In 1956 works were purchased at the Peace and Friendship Festival of the Soviet Union.

In 1958, Ishii began studying with Sugano Yō. In 1959 he became a member of the "Club of Avant-garde Artists of Japan" ( 日本 ア ヴ ァ ン ギ ャ ル ド 美術 家 ク ラ ブ , Nihon avangyarudo bijutsuka kurabu ). In 1960 he received the Japanese Graphics Association Prize.

The exacerbation of his chronic asthma resulted in early death in 1960.
