The Isis Lock (also known as the Louse Lock ) is a lock that connects the Oxford Canal and Castle Mill Stream in Oxford , England .

location

The Isis Lock is located immediately north of the confluence of the Sheepwash Channel in the Castle Mill Stream ( "Castle Mill Stream Junction" ). The Sheepwash Channel connects to the Thames to the west. To the west of the lock are Rewley Road and the Cherwell Valley Line and Cotswold Line, north of Oxford Rail Station. To the east of the Oxford Canal is Worcester College , one of the colleges of the University of Oxford .

history

The Oxford Canal and the Sheepwash Channel were originally connected by a floodgate on Hythe Bridge. From 1795 to 1797 Daniel Harris replaced this with the Isis Lock, a lock large enough to allow Thames Barges access to the Oxford Canal Company's quays on Worcester Street. This was converted into a lock for narrow boats in 1844 .
