The title Isitwalandwe or Seaparankwe , sometimes Isitwalandwe-Seaparankoe , is the highest honor of the African National Congress and is awarded in the form of a medal . This honors people who have made an outstanding contribution and remarkable sacrifice in the liberation struggle for South Africa . The term in isiXhosa and in the Sotho Tswana languages means that special person “who wears the feathers of the rare bird”. The award was first presented in 1955 at the Congress of the People and three people were recognized at the same time. The titleholders include people of European and non-European origin from South African history.

The title alludes to a tradition in Bantu societies that used this designation to honor only their best warriors or leaders for exceptional leadership qualities and heroism.
