The Isländer Brücke is a road bridge over the Wupper in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . The steel bridge connects the Iceland bank street south of the Wupper with the northern right bank of the river with the streets Schlossbleiche and Wall . The street, which is regulated as a one-way street, has been included in Street Wall since April 4, 1905.
A bridge had existed at this point since at least 1759; this wooden bridge was replaced by a stone one in 1807 and renewed in 1892 and 1928. The name "Iceland" and "Islandufer" refer to a residential area, at that time outside the actual Elberfeld city center. There lived serfs of the castle rule Burg Elberfeld and had the task of keeping the protective moats of the castle free of ice. In the past, strong ice formations formed here on severe winter days. “Iceland” is derived from Eisland . In the city plans by Johann Merken 1760 and 1775, the district is also described as Eißland and Eysland .
