Isla Perico is an island in El Salvador . It is located around 6 kilometers north of the new port of Puerto La Unión Centroamericana in the Gulf of Fonseca in the Bahia de La Union bay.

history

The island with an area of 1.02 km² was permanently settled in the 1940s. The first families to settle on the island came from the municipality of San Alejo, about ten kilometers away as the crow flies . The offspring were born on the island of Perico. Nothing is known about a former prehistoric settlement of the island.

The population is said to be around 100 people. The housing estate is located in the northeast part of the island. In addition to around 25 single-family houses, mostly made of mangrove wood, there is also a primary school for around 35 children that is financed and maintained by the Ministerio de Educación (El Salvador Ministry of Education). Administratively, the island belongs to the department of La Unión .

Most of the inhabitants are engaged in artisanal fishing and extraction of mussels , oysters and abalone . In addition, agriculture and cattle breeding are operated for self-sufficiency. The wood required for the black mangrove grows in the brackish water area off the island.

The drinking water for the residents is obtained by ship from the mainland. The rest of the water required for washing clothes and bathing comes from small freshwater wells that are located on the shores of the island. The power supply consists of solar systems or diesel-powered generators.
