The Islamic Center of Washington

The Islamic Center of Washington consists of a mosque and an Islamic cultural center in Washington, DC , United States . Opened in 1957, the center is located on Embassy Row on Massachusetts Avenue just east of the bridge over the Potomac . At the time of opening, the mosque was considered the largest Islamic prayer house in the western hemisphere. About 6,000 believers take part in Friday prayers .

The mosque was visited by many high dignitaries, including various presidents. President George W. Bush's visit on September 17, 2001, just days after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, attracted a lot of attention .

In addition to the mosque, the center houses a library and classrooms that are used for Islamic courses and Arabic language courses.
