The Island Bend Pondage is one of the 15 artificial lakes dammed up in the Snowy Mountains System to generate energy. The lake is essentially fed by the Snowy River , which flows west of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales , Australia . The settlement of Island Bend , located above the reservoir , can be reached from Jindabyne via a side street off the dead end road to Charlotte Pass (distance 28 km).

In addition to the water from the Snowy River, water that is diverted from a weir in the lower reaches of the Gungarlin River also flows into the reservoir. The water collected there is channeled through the 23.5 km long Eucumbene-Snowy tunnel into Lake Eucumbene and from there on to the Murray River . The water required in Island Bend is channeled through the Snowy-Geehi tunnel .
