The Lake Eucumbene was created as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme by an earth dam, which the Eucumbene River in the Snowy Mountains in the south of New South Wales in Australia dams. The lake is about 40 kilometers from Cooma and about 80 kilometers from Canberra . The largest reservoir of a total of 16 reservoirs in the Snowy Mountains system is around 1200 meters above sea level .

The dam is 116 m high and 636 m wide at the base. The artificial reservoir is supposed to hold nine times more water than the natural harbor of Sydney . The dam was built between 1956 and 1958. The lake is located in the Kosciuszko National Park .

The Eucumbene River , a tunnel from the Tumut Pondage and water from the Tantangara Dam flows into Lake Eucumbene .

When the dam was flooded, the village of Adaminaby , on the side of the Snowy Mountains Highway , went under . It was rebuilt elsewhere and is the closest town to the lake. When the water level is low, the wooden post foundations of the old buildings can be seen. In the lake, tourists fish for trout , rainbow trout and brown trout. The fish were used and therefore there are also salmon in the lake.
