life and work

Isoda was a mid Edo period ukiyoe artist who was active in the 1770s and created a number of prints of beautiful women. He was a samurai of the Tsuchiya-Han, but gave up this position in order to become an ukiyoe artist. He worked when Harunobu was at the height of his fame, creating prints based heavily on his style, signed as "Haruhiro" ( 春 広 ). After Harunobu's death in 1770 he called himself "Koryūsai" and developed his own style.

His best-known work is a series of prints entitled "Young Dolls in Their New Year's Clothes " ( 雛形 若 菜 の 初 模 様Hinagata wakana no hatsumoyō ) depicting the courtesans of Yoshiwara , Edo . He turned out to be an excellent designer of genre scenes.

Isoda loved the elongated print format Hashira-e ( 柱 絵 ), the format called “post pictures”. In his later years he turned to his subject area of painting and received the honorary title Hokkyō.
