Isonad in Ehon Hyaku Monogatari , 1841

Isonade ( Japanese 磯 撫 'coastal pats ' ) is a fictional creature of Japanese popular belief ( Yōkai ).

The best-known description can be found in the Yōkai dictionary of images Ehon Hyaku Monogatari from 1841. In it, it is described as a large shark- like fish off the coast of the province of Hizen (today's prefectures of Saga and Nagasaki ), whose tail fin is coated with innumerable fine needles, with which he draws people into the water. However, it mentions that it is probably identical to the man-eating crocodile found in the Tanchō Banashi ( 南朝 咄 ) before Buzen and the Ōguchiwani ( 巨 口 鰐'giant mouth crocodile ' ) described in the Honzō Ikō ( 本草 異 考 ) .

In addition to these tales from the island of Kyushu , the Isonade was also known around Kumano in Mie Prefecture . Also described here as a long-tailed shark, people who were found dead on the beach were referred to as being "caressed by the Isonade".
