history

In 1878 the chemist Carl Grünzweig and the businessman Paul Hartmann founded the chemical-technical product factory of Grünzweig & Hartmann oHG in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Their aim was to research and manufacture new insulation materials, since conventional insulation materials such as straw , chaff or animal skins were no longer sufficient for insulation.

With the first patent (1880), new insulation materials were developed based on cork , e.g. B. cork stone and tar cork . The product Expansit , which was made from cork granules , represented the first major milestone.

In 1938, the technicians from Grünzweig and Hartmann experimented with rock wool for the first time in addition to cork products . In 1964 Grünzweig und Hartmann AG secured the sole right to sell a new insulation material from BASF , Styrodur . In 1968 the aluminum- clad mineral wool insulation mat "Rollisol" followed, which also made insulation easier for do-it-yourselfers. Rollisol can be found under every fourth roof in Germany today.

In 1971, the French Saint-Gobain group took over 95% of the share capital of Grünzweig and Hartmann AG . The original company was merged with Aachener Glasfaser GmbH , which brought glass wool insulation materials into the range. In 1984 Isover developed the clamping felt.
