Israel ben Joseph

Israel ben Josef was the founder of the Remuh Synagogue in Krakow-Kazimierz and the father of Moses Isserles .

Life

There is little information about his life. Israel was a grandson of Mosche Auerbach from Regensburg . In 1519 he came to Krakow with other Jews from Regensburg. In 1525 his son Mosche Isserles was born there.

In 1552 his mother, wife Malka and daughter-in-law Golda died in a plague epidemic. Israel was a wealthy businessman at the time and a recognized member of the Casimir Church. He donated a synagogue on his own property to the legacy of his late wife. The synagogue was inaugurated in 1553, and only in 1556 was the official confirmation from the Polish King Sigismund II August . The synagogue was (later? ) Named after his son Moshe (acronym ReMa ).
